Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Media Relations Lead to join our Corporate Affairs team in Wangaratta, VIC. This pivotal role will focus on enhancing the Commonwealth Bank’s reputation and managing our corporate narrative within the media landscape. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and executing proactive media strategies, managing media inquiries, and providing expert advice on complex issues. This role requires a strategic thinker with exceptional communication skills and a deep understanding of the financial services sector and regional media dynamics. You will play a crucial role in protecting and promoting the brand, ensuring consistent messaging, and building strong relationships with journalists and stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement comprehensive media relations strategies aligned with corporate objectives.
- Act as a primary contact for media inquiries, managing responses and ensuring timely and accurate information dissemination.
- Proactively identify media opportunities and pitch compelling stories to enhance brand visibility and reputation.
- Prepare spokespeople for media engagements, including developing key messages, Q&A documents, and media training.
- Monitor media coverage, analyse trends, and provide insights and recommendations to senior management.
- Manage crisis communications and issues management, providing strategic counsel and executing rapid response plans.
- Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with key journalists, editors, and industry influencers.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including marketing, legal, and investor relations, to ensure integrated communications.
- Draft and edit press releases, media advisories, backgrounders, and other communication materials.
- Stay abreast of industry trends, regulatory changes, and competitive landscape to inform media strategies.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in corporate media relations or public affairs, preferably within financial services.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with a keen eye for detail.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and execute effective media strategies.
- Strong understanding of the Australian media landscape, including traditional and digital channels.
- Experience in crisis management and issues resolution.
- Ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and manage multiple priorities.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport with diverse stakeholders.
- Proficiency in media monitoring and analysis tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field.
- Postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline.
- Existing network of media contacts within regional Victoria and national financial press.
- Experience working with or for large, complex organisations.
- Familiarity with regulatory frameworks impacting the financial services industry in Australia.
