Job Description

We are seeking a passionate and driven Sustainability Coordinator to lead our Council Green Initiatives. This pivotal role involves planning, implementing, and monitoring sustainability projects aimed at reducing our environmental footprint and promoting eco-friendly practices within the Whyalla community. You will collaborate with various departments, stakeholders, and community groups to drive meaningful change and contribute to a greener future for Whyalla.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and manage a portfolio of sustainability projects and programs, focusing on waste reduction, energy efficiency, water conservation, and biodiversity protection.
  • Monitor and report on environmental performance indicators, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and Council policies.
  • Engage with community groups, local businesses, and educational institutions to promote sustainability awareness and participation in green initiatives.
  • Prepare grant applications and secure funding for sustainability projects.
  • Provide expert advice and support to Council departments on environmental best practices and sustainable procurement.
  • Organize and facilitate workshops, events, and campaigns to educate the community on environmental issues and solutions.
  • Conduct research and stay abreast of emerging sustainability trends, technologies, and policy developments.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in environmental management, sustainability, or a related field.
  • Strong project management skills with a track record of delivering successful environmental initiatives.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to engage and influence diverse stakeholders, including community members, businesses, and government agencies.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and reporting on environmental metrics.
  • Knowledge of Australian environmental regulations and sustainability frameworks.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Urban Planning, or a related discipline.
  • Experience working within a local government context.
  • Familiarity with grant writing and funding acquisition processes.
  • Certification in project management (e.g., PRINCE2, PMP).
