Job Description

Join the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries as a Fisheries Patrol Assistant in Bowen. This vital role supports the protection and sustainable management of Queensland’s valuable fisheries resources. You will work as part of a dedicated team, primarily outdoors, to monitor fishing activities, enforce regulations, and educate the public on responsible fishing practices. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual passionate about environmental conservation and community engagement to contribute directly to the health of our marine environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular patrols of waterways, coastal areas, and fishing grounds to monitor compliance with fisheries legislation.
  • Inspect fishing licenses, catches, and gear to ensure adherence to size limits, bag limits, and other regulations.
  • Collect data on fishing activities, marine life, and environmental conditions.
  • Educate the public, including recreational and commercial fishers, on fisheries regulations and sustainable practices.
  • Assist in the investigation of suspected breaches of fisheries laws and prepare accurate reports.
  • Maintain patrol equipment, including vehicles, vessels, and communication devices.
  • Respond to public inquiries and provide accurate information regarding fisheries management.
  • Collaborate with other government agencies, industry stakeholders, and local communities.
  • Participate in community engagement programs and outreach activities.

Required Skills

  • Proven ability to communicate effectively and confidently with a diverse range of people.
  • Basic knowledge of fisheries management principles and marine ecosystems.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in various outdoor environments.
  • Demonstrated physical fitness suitable for outdoor work, including boat operations and patrolling.
  • Strong observational skills and attention to detail for data collection and inspection duties.
  • Valid C class Queensland Driver's License.
  • Ability to complete accurate written reports and maintain records.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current coxswain or boat license.
  • Previous experience in a regulatory, enforcement, or conservation role.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in environmental science, marine biology, conservation, or a related field.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Experience operating quad bikes or other off-road vehicles.
