Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Sound Technician to join our dynamic production team. This role is crucial in delivering exceptional audio experiences for a wide array of live events and studio recordings at Arts Centre Melbourne. You will be responsible for the setup, operation, and maintenance of sound equipment, ensuring high-quality audio reproduction across various performance spaces. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of live sound engineering, studio production techniques, and a commitment to technical excellence and artistic collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain sound consoles, microphones, speakers, and other audio equipment for live performances, rehearsals, and recordings.
  • Perform sound checks, troubleshoot technical issues, and ensure optimal audio levels and quality throughout events.
  • Assist with the setup and strike of audio systems for various productions, including rigging, cabling, and system calibration.
  • Collaborate with artists, directors, and production managers to achieve desired sonic aesthetics and fulfill technical riders.
  • Conduct regular preventative maintenance and minor repairs on sound equipment to ensure reliability and longevity.
  • Participate in the inventory management of sound equipment and recommend upgrades or replacements as needed.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations for stage operations and equipment handling.
  • Provide technical support for studio recordings, mixing, and post-production tasks as required.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience as a Sound Technician in live events or studio environments.
  • Proficiency with digital and analog sound consoles (e.g., DiGiCo, Yamaha, Avid VENUE).
  • Strong understanding of audio signal flow, acoustics, and sound reinforcement principles.
  • Experience with microphone placement techniques and wireless microphone systems.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve complex audio issues quickly and efficiently.
  • Familiarity with industry-standard audio software (e.g., Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Ableton Live).
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays, as dictated by performance schedules.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Diploma or Degree in Audio Engineering, Sound Production, or a related field.
  • Experience with network audio protocols (e.g., Dante, AVB).
  • Knowledge of theatrical sound design principles.
  • Current First Aid certification.
  • Forklift license or experience with elevated work platforms.
