Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Shipwright to join our specialist marine repairs team in Mount Isa. This critical role involves performing intricate repair, maintenance, and fabrication tasks on a diverse range of marine vessels and structures, including industrial watercraft, pontoons, and other specialized marine assets. The ideal candidate will possess an extensive background in marine construction and repair, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to work independently and as part of a dedicated team to deliver exceptional results. Your expertise will ensure the structural integrity and operational reliability of our clients’ marine equipment, upholding Hastings Deering’s reputation for excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute comprehensive repair, overhaul, and maintenance tasks on marine vessels, hulls, and superstructures.
- Perform fabrication, welding, and fitting of marine components according to specifications and safety standards.
- Inspect and assess damage to marine structures, determining appropriate repair methods and materials.
- Interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to guide repair and construction activities.
- Work with various materials including steel, aluminum, and composites, applying appropriate techniques.
- Conduct quality checks and ensure all work adheres to industry standards and regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with engineering and project management teams to plan and execute complex repair projects.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, strictly adhering to all WHS policies.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior team members when required.
Required Skills
- Trade Qualification as a Shipwright or equivalent marine fabrication/engineering certification.
- Minimum of 5 years of practical experience in marine repair, shipbuilding, or heavy fabrication.
- Proficiency in various welding techniques (MIG, TIG, MMA) on steel and aluminum.
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret complex technical drawings and specifications.
- Strong understanding of marine structural integrity and repair methodologies.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Commitment to workplace health and safety practices.
- Current Australian Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with composite materials repair and fabrication.
- Forklift and EWP licenses.
- Confined Space and Working at Heights certifications.
- Experience in a heavy industrial or mining support environment.
- Ability to operate a range of workshop machinery and hand tools.
