Job Description
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Remote E-book Formatter with a strong focus on digital publishing to join our innovative team. This 100% remote role involves preparing manuscripts for various e-book formats, ensuring high quality, accessibility, and compatibility across different devices and platforms. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in current e-book standards (EPUB, MOBI) and demonstrate a keen eye for typographical detail and layout. You will play a crucial part in bringing our diverse catalog of books to life in the digital realm, working closely with editorial and production teams to maintain our high standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Convert raw manuscript files into clean, valid, and accessible EPUB2, EPUB3, and MOBI formats.
- Implement complex layouts, styling, and interactive features while adhering to digital publishing best practices.
- Perform rigorous quality assurance checks on all formatted e-books to ensure accuracy, functionality, and visual integrity across a wide range of e-readers and mobile devices.
- Collaborate with editorial, design, and production teams to resolve formatting challenges and optimize content for digital consumption.
- Stay updated on the latest e-book technologies, industry standards, and digital publishing trends.
- Troubleshoot and fix rendering issues, broken links, and other technical problems in e-book files.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously, meeting strict deadlines and maintaining high standards of quality.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in HTML5, CSS3, and XML for e-book production.
- Expertise in EPUB validation tools and standards (e.g., FlightDeck, EPUBCheck).
- Familiarity with Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Word, and other relevant desktop publishing software.
- Strong understanding of typography, layout principles, and graphic design fundamentals.
- Exceptional attention to detail and a methodical approach to problem-solving.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills for a remote team environment.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Publishing, Graphic Design, Computer Science).
- Experience with accessibility standards for digital content (WCAG).
- Knowledge of scripting languages (e.g., Python, JavaScript) for automation tasks.
- Previous experience working with content management systems (CMS) in a publishing context.
