Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Sawmill Production Lead to join our dynamic team in Birmingham. This critical role involves overseeing daily production operations within our heavy industrial sawmill, ensuring targets are met efficiently, safely, and to the highest quality standards. The Production Lead will be responsible for managing a team of operators, optimising workflow, troubleshooting operational issues, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise a team of sawmill operators, fostering a productive and safe working environment.
  • Oversee the daily planning and execution of sawmill production schedules to meet output targets.
  • Monitor equipment performance, identify maintenance needs, and coordinate with the maintenance team to minimise downtime.
  • Implement and enforce all health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures.
  • Conduct regular quality checks on timber products to ensure adherence to company standards.
  • Analyse production data, identify areas for improvement, and implement efficiency initiatives.
  • Train new operators and provide ongoing coaching and development for existing staff.
  • Manage raw material flow and finished product dispatch to ensure smooth operations.
  • Prepare daily production reports and communicate performance to management.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (minimum 4 years) in a production leadership role within a heavy industrial or sawmill environment.
  • Strong understanding of sawmill machinery, processes, and timber grading.
  • Excellent leadership, team management, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot operational issues and implement effective solutions.
  • Thorough knowledge of health and safety regulations pertinent to heavy industrial operations.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications for reporting and data analysis.
  • Ability to work effectively in a demanding, physically active environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in Wood Processing, Manufacturing Operations, or a related field.
  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma methodologies.
  • First Aid at Work certification.
  • Forklift operator license.
