Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Hatchery Manager to oversee all aspects of our aquaculture hatchery operations in Maitland, NSW. The successful candidate will be responsible for the full lifecycle management within the hatchery, from breeding and larval rearing to water quality management, disease prevention, and facility maintenance. This role requires a strong leader who can drive operational excellence, ensure optimal production, and maintain the highest standards of animal health and welfare.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage daily operations of the aquaculture hatchery, including planning, scheduling, and resource allocation.
  • Develop and implement effective breeding programs for target aquatic species to meet production goals.
  • Rigorously monitor and maintain optimal water quality parameters across all hatchery systems.
  • Implement and enforce stringent biosecurity protocols and disease prevention strategies.
  • Oversee feed management and ensure appropriate nutritional requirements are met for all life stages.
  • Train, mentor, and supervise hatchery staff, promoting a safe and productive work environment.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed production records, inventory, and operational reports.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all relevant environmental, health, and safety regulations.
  • Manage and troubleshoot hatchery equipment maintenance, ensuring operational reliability and efficiency.
  • Contribute to budgeting and cost control initiatives for the hatchery facility.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 5 years of proven experience in aquaculture hatchery management.
  • Strong foundational knowledge of fish or crustacean biology, reproduction, and early life stage development.
  • Expertise in water quality management, including the operation and troubleshooting of Recirculation Aquaculture Systems (RAS).
  • Comprehensive understanding of aquatic animal health, pathology, and effective disease prevention methods.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities with experience in team management, motivation, and training.
  • Exceptional problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.
  • Proficiency in data recording, analysis, and generation of clear, concise reports.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Aquaculture, Marine Biology, Fisheries Science, or a closely related scientific field.
  • Specific experience with species relevant to Australian aquaculture (e.g., Barramundi, Prawns, Snapper).
  • Certifications in First Aid or advanced Aquatic Animal Health.
  • Familiarity with industry-specific software for hatchery management and data analysis.
