Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Fine Art Appraiser with a strong technical background to join our expert team in Adelaide. This pivotal role involves the comprehensive appraisal of diverse fine art pieces, with a particular emphasis on employing scientific and technical analysis to authenticate, assess condition, and determine provenance. The ideal candidate will combine deep art historical knowledge with practical experience in scientific diagnostic techniques, playing a crucial part in maintaining the integrity and value of the artworks we handle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough visual and technical examinations of fine art objects to determine authenticity, condition, and attribution.
  • Utilize scientific analysis methods (e.g., X-ray fluorescence, UV/IR spectroscopy, microscopy) for pigment analysis, signature authentication, and structural assessment.
  • Prepare detailed condition reports, conservation recommendations, and comprehensive appraisal documents for various purposes including sale, insurance, estate, and donation.
  • Research provenance, exhibition history, and bibliographic references for artworks, leveraging internal and external databases.
  • Liaise with clients, conservators, art historians, and other specialists to gather information and validate findings.
  • Monitor market trends, auction results, and art historical scholarship to ensure accurate and up-to-date valuations.
  • Contribute to educational initiatives and internal training on technical art examination techniques.
  • Adhere to industry best practices and ethical guidelines in all appraisal activities.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in fine art appraisal, conservation, or technical art history.
  • Demonstrated expertise in art historical periods, styles, and artists relevant to major international art markets.
  • Proficiency in various scientific analytical techniques used in art examination (e.g., XRF, FTIR, UV-vis, microscopy).
  • Strong research skills, particularly in provenance and market analysis.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical information clearly.
  • High level of attention to detail and analytical problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or higher in Art History, Conservation Science, Material Science, or a related field.
  • Accreditation or candidacy for a recognized appraisal organization (e.g., ASA, AAA, RICS).
  • Experience with a variety of art media, including paintings, sculptures, and works on paper.
  • Familiarity with art market databases and professional appraisal software.
  • Prior experience in an auction house, gallery, museum, or private appraisal firm.
