Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Art Conservator (Assistant) to join our Fine Arts conservation team. This entry-level position is ideal for a recent graduate or an individual early in their conservation career who is eager to gain practical experience in a professional museum setting. The Assistant Conservator will support senior conservators in the preservation, restoration, and documentation of SAM’s diverse art collection, encompassing paintings, sculptures, works on paper, and ceramics. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the long-term care of significant artworks and to develop specialized skills under expert guidance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior conservators with condition assessments and detailed documentation of artworks.
  • Perform minor conservation treatments, including surface cleaning, consolidation, and basic repairs, under direct supervision.
  • Prepare artworks for exhibition, storage, and loan, including packing and handling.
  • Monitor environmental conditions within galleries and storage areas, and assist with pest management strategies.
  • Maintain conservation laboratories, equipment, and supply inventories.
  • Conduct research on conservation materials and methods relevant to the collection.
  • Contribute to exhibition planning and installation from a conservation perspective.
  • Adhere to professional conservation ethics and standards, ensuring the highest level of care for the collection.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Conservation, Fine Arts, Art History, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated strong attention to detail and manual dexterity.
  • Basic knowledge of art materials and their degradation processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in using standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Physical ability to safely handle and move artworks, sometimes requiring lifting or standing for extended periods.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or postgraduate diploma in Art Conservation.
  • Previous internship or volunteer experience in a museum or gallery conservation department.
  • Familiarity with collection management systems (e.g., EMu, TMS).
  • Knowledge of Australian conservation practices and standards.
  • Experience with digital photography and image editing for documentation.
