Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Food Service Assistant to join our team at Grafton Base Hospital and our associated aged care facilities. In this vital role, you will be responsible for preparing and serving meals, maintaining kitchen hygiene, and ensuring a positive dining experience for patients and residents. This position requires an individual who is attentive, understands dietary requirements, and can work efficiently in a fast-paced healthcare environment. You will play a crucial part in the daily lives of those under our care, contributing to their comfort and recovery through excellent food service.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the preparation and presentation of meals and snacks for patients and residents, adhering to strict dietary guidelines and food safety standards.
- Serve meals to patients and residents in wards and dining areas, providing friendly and respectful service.
- Clean and sanitize kitchen equipment, utensils, and work areas in accordance with health and safety regulations.
- Restock food service areas, including pantries and ward kitchenettes.
- Monitor food temperatures and ensure proper storage to prevent spoilage.
- Collect and wash dishes, cutlery, and trays after meal service.
- Communicate effectively with nursing staff and dietitians regarding patient/resident dietary needs and preferences.
- Assist with inventory management and ordering of supplies as required.
- Adhere to all NNSWLHD policies and procedures, including those related to WHS and infection control.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated ability to follow instructions and work effectively in a team environment.
- Strong understanding of food hygiene and safety practices (HACCP principles preferred).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a compassionate and patient-focused approach.
- Ability to work efficiently under pressure and manage time effectively.
- Physical stamina to stand for extended periods, lift moderate weights, and perform repetitive tasks.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in food service, particularly within a hospital, aged care, or commercial kitchen setting.
- Certificate II or III in Hospitality, Commercial Cookery, or Food Service.
- Current Food Handler's Certificate.
