Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Fisheries Patrol Assistant to join our team in Werribee. This vital role supports the enforcement of fisheries regulations and the promotion of sustainable fishing practices across Victoria’s waterways. You will work closely with Fisheries Officers, engaging with the public, conducting patrols, and assisting with investigations to protect our marine and freshwater environments. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual passionate about environmental conservation and community engagement.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist Fisheries Officers in conducting routine patrols of waterways, coastal areas, and fishing access points.
- Engage with the public to provide information on fishing regulations, promote safe practices, and foster compliance.
- Record and report observations related to fishing activities, environmental conditions, and potential breaches of regulations.
- Assist with the collection of evidence and preparation of reports for investigations and enforcement actions.
- Participate in educational and community outreach programs to raise awareness about sustainable fishing.
- Support the maintenance and operation of patrol equipment, including vehicles and vessels.
- Respond to public inquiries and complaints regarding fisheries matters.
- Contribute to data collection and monitoring programs for fish stocks and aquatic habitats.
Required Skills
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse groups.
- Demonstrated understanding of or keen interest in Victorian fisheries regulations and aquatic environments.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in various outdoor conditions.
- Basic computer literacy for data entry and report writing.
- Current Victorian Driver's License.
- Physical fitness suitable for outdoor work, including walking, climbing, and potentially operating small vessels.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant tertiary qualification in environmental science, marine biology, conservation, or a related field.
- Experience in a regulatory, enforcement, or conservation role.
- First Aid Certificate.
- Boat handling experience or relevant marine qualifications (e.g., marine license).
