Job Description

Fulton Hogan is seeking an experienced Dam Inspector to join our civil infrastructure team in Cairns, Queensland. This crucial role involves overseeing the inspection, monitoring, and assessment of various dam structures to ensure their safety, integrity, and compliance with all relevant engineering standards and regulatory requirements. The successful candidate will be instrumental in identifying potential issues, recommending remedial actions, and maintaining comprehensive records, contributing directly to public safety and the longevity of vital water infrastructure. This position requires regular site visits and is entirely on-site.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough visual and technical inspections of dam structures, including embankments, spillways, outlets, and associated facilities.
  • Perform structural and geotechnical assessments to evaluate dam performance, stability, and integrity.
  • Monitor and interpret data from dam instrumentation (e.g., piezometers, inclinometers, settlement markers).
  • Prepare detailed, accurate, and timely inspection reports, including photographic documentation, findings, and recommendations for maintenance or repair.
  • Ensure all inspection activities comply with Australian National Committee on Large Dams (ANCOLD) guidelines, state regulations, and Fulton Hogan's safety protocols.
  • Collaborate with civil engineers, hydrologists, and project managers to assess risks and develop effective management strategies.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of routine maintenance and emergency response procedures related to dam safety.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry best practices, technologies, and regulatory changes in dam safety and civil infrastructure.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in civil infrastructure, with a focus on dam inspection, construction, or maintenance.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of dam engineering principles, hydrology, and geotechnical analysis.
  • Proficiency in technical report writing and data interpretation.
  • Strong understanding of Australian dam safety guidelines and standards (e.g., ANCOLD).
  • Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently in varied outdoor environments and challenging terrains.
  • Valid Australian driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration or eligibility for registration in Australia.
  • Specialized certifications in dam safety inspection or risk assessment.
  • Experience with CADD software and GIS for mapping and data management.
  • Prior experience working on projects in regional Queensland.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for stakeholder engagement.
