Job Description

Are you passionate about contemporary art and eager to gain hands-on experience in the dynamic world of gallery and museum administration? Jan Murphy Gallery is offering an exciting Fine Arts Internship opportunity for a dedicated and enthusiastic individual. This internship provides invaluable exposure to the daily operations of a prominent art gallery, from exhibition coordination to artist liaison and collection management. You will work closely with our experienced team, contributing to various aspects of gallery administration and learning the essential skills required for a career in the arts sector. This is a unique chance to immerse yourself in the Brisbane art scene, develop practical skills, and build professional networks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with exhibition preparation, installation, and de-installation.
  • Support administrative tasks including data entry, filing, and record keeping.
  • Help manage gallery databases (artist portfolios, artwork inventory, client relations).
  • Assist with communications, including drafting exhibition announcements and social media content.
  • Support client relations and sales inquiries, providing information about artworks and artists.
  • Contribute to the packing and unpacking of artworks for shipping and storage.
  • Provide general support for gallery events, openings, and public programs.
  • Conduct research on artists, art markets, and relevant industry trends.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated passion for contemporary art and art history.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational abilities and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proactive attitude and willingness to learn.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or recently completed a degree program in Fine Arts, Art History, Museum Studies, Arts Management, or a related field.
  • Previous volunteer or internship experience in a gallery, museum, or cultural institution.
  • Familiarity with art database software (e.g., Artlogic, Artsy, Collectrium).
  • Basic graphic design skills (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite).
