Job Description
Join WWF-Australia as a Marine Biology Intern with a focus on Coastal Conservation. This exciting internship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to vital environmental projects aimed at safeguarding Australia’s marine and coastal ecosystems. While based in Albury, NSW, the role will provide exposure to projects that often have a direct or indirect impact on coastal health and marine biodiversity, particularly through understanding upstream impacts and freshwater-marine linkages. You will work alongside experienced marine biologists and conservationists, gaining hands-on experience in research, data collection, and community engagement initiatives. This internship is designed for passionate individuals eager to develop their skills and make a tangible difference in the field of conservation.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior marine biologists with data collection and analysis for ongoing research projects.
- Participate in field surveys, including habitat assessments and species identification (may involve freshwater systems with coastal impact).
- Support the development and implementation of conservation strategies and community outreach programs.
- Conduct literature reviews and desktop research on relevant marine and coastal conservation topics.
- Prepare reports, presentations, and other communication materials to share findings.
- Aid in the maintenance of research equipment and project logistics.
- Engage with local communities and stakeholders under supervision to promote conservation awareness.
Required Skills
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Biology, or a related field.
- Basic understanding of ecological principles and conservation issues.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Enthusiasm for environmental conservation and a willingness to learn.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous volunteer experience in conservation or environmental organizations.
- Familiarity with GIS software or statistical analysis tools.
- Experience with fieldwork, including data collection and sample processing.
- A valid driver's license.
