Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and resilient Fire Communications Officer for an immediate hire to join our critical response team in Surfers Paradise. This vital role is at the heart of our emergency operations, responsible for receiving, evaluating, and dispatching emergency calls, as well as coordinating resources during critical incidents. You will be the first point of contact for individuals in distress, requiring exceptional calm under pressure, rapid decision-making, and a clear, concise communication style. Key Responsibilities
- Receive and process emergency calls (000/13Qld) for fire, rescue, and other critical incidents.
- Accurately assess the nature and location of emergencies, dispatching appropriate resources.
- Maintain continuous communication with responding units, providing critical information and support.
- Log all incidents and actions accurately and efficiently in the dispatch system.
- Monitor emergency radio channels and internal communication systems.
- Liaise with other emergency services and agencies (Police, Ambulance) as required.
- Provide pre-arrival instructions to callers in life-threatening situations.
- Maintain a high level of professionalism and confidentiality.
- Participate in ongoing training and development programs.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in a high-pressure communications or dispatch environment.
- Exceptional active listening and verbal communication skills.
- Strong geographical knowledge of the Gold Coast region.
- Ability to remain calm, focused, and make critical decisions rapidly during emergencies.
- Proficiency in computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems and standard office software.
- Excellent multi-tasking and organizational abilities.
- Sound understanding of emergency protocols and procedures.
- Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certificate III or IV in Public Safety (Communications Centre Operations).
- Previous experience as an emergency services dispatcher (Fire, Police, Ambulance).
- Knowledge of Australian emergency management frameworks.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Fluency in additional languages.
