Job Description
Join the Katherine Town Council as a Local Laws Officer with a primary focus on Animal Management and Parking enforcement. This dynamic role involves ensuring compliance with local government legislation, promoting public safety, and contributing to the orderly functioning of our community. You will be responsible for investigating breaches, educating residents, and enforcing regulations related to animal welfare, responsible pet ownership, and parking restrictions. This position requires strong communication skills, a firm but fair approach, and the ability to work independently and as part of a dedicated team.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct proactive patrols and respond to complaints regarding animal management, including stray animals, barking dogs, and dangerous dog incidents.
- Investigate alleged breaches of local laws and ordinances related to animal control and parking.
- Issue warnings, infringement notices, and official cautions as required, ensuring compliance with legal procedures.
- Educate the public on local laws, responsible pet ownership, and parking regulations.
- Manage animal impoundments, coordinate with animal shelters, and facilitate reuniting pets with owners.
- Monitor and enforce parking restrictions and regulations across the Katherine area.
- Prepare detailed reports, maintain accurate records, and gather evidence for potential legal proceedings.
- Represent the Council in court matters related to local laws enforcement, if necessary.
- Collaborate with internal departments and external agencies, including NT Police, for effective enforcement.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated experience in local laws enforcement or a similar regulatory compliance role.
- Thorough knowledge of relevant legislation, including animal management acts and parking regulations.
- Strong investigative and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to handle challenging situations professionally.
- Proficiency in record-keeping and report writing.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle and hold a current C-class driver's license.
- Physical fitness to conduct patrols and animal handling when required.
- Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certificate IV in Government (Statutory Compliance) or equivalent.
- Experience with animal handling and welfare practices.
- First Aid certification.
- Knowledge of the Katherine region and its diverse community.
