Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Multicultural Liaison Officer to join our dynamic team. This pivotal role involves facilitating effective communication and cultural understanding between healthcare professionals and patients from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. You will play a crucial part in ensuring equitable access to health services, promoting cultural safety, and advocating for the specific needs of multicultural communities within our hospital setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a primary point of contact and liaison for patients and families from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds.
  • Provide cultural advice and support to healthcare staff to enhance culturally safe and responsive service delivery.
  • Assist patients in navigating the healthcare system, explaining procedures, and ensuring informed consent in a culturally appropriate manner.
  • Identify and address barriers to access healthcare services for CALD communities.
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve communication and engagement with diverse community groups.
  • Collaborate with community organisations and networks to promote health literacy and preventive health initiatives.
  • Contribute to the development of culturally inclusive policies and practices within the hospital.
  • Provide interpreting services where appropriate or facilitate professional interpreter engagement.

Required Skills

  • Fluent in English and at least one other language relevant to the local multicultural communities (e.g., Arabic, Italian, Greek, Hindi, Punjabi).
  • Demonstrated understanding of diverse cultural practices, beliefs, and communication styles, particularly in a healthcare context.
  • Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills.
  • Strong advocacy and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency in standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Valid Victorian Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in community services, social work, public health, cultural studies, or a related field.
  • Previous experience in a liaison, advocacy, or community engagement role, preferably within a healthcare or social services setting.
  • Knowledge of health services and systems in Victoria, Australia.
  • Accreditation as a professional interpreter (NAATI certification).
