Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Farm Operations Lead to oversee and optimize large-scale agricultural operations in the Port Pirie region. This pivotal role involves managing all aspects of farm production, from crop planning and cultivation to harvest and post-harvest activities, ensuring efficiency, sustainability, and profitability. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a dedicated team, implementing best practices, and driving operational excellence across our farming enterprise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategic operational plans for large-scale farming activities, aligning with business objectives.
  • Manage and supervise farm staff, including recruitment, training, performance management, and fostering a positive work environment.
  • Oversee all crop production cycles, including soil preparation, planting, irrigation, nutrient management, pest and disease control, and harvesting.
  • Maintain and optimize farm machinery and equipment, ensuring regular servicing, preventative maintenance, and efficient operation.
  • Implement and monitor best practices for land management, water usage, and environmental sustainability, adhering to relevant regulations.
  • Manage farm budgets, financial reporting, inventory control, and procurement of supplies.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant agricultural regulations, industry standards, and occupational health and safety (OH&S) requirements.
  • Liaise effectively with suppliers, contractors, agronomists, and other stakeholders to ensure smooth operations.
  • Analyse operational data, identify areas for improvement, and implement corrective actions to enhance productivity and efficiency.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (minimum 5 years) in large-scale farm operations management, preferably in broadacre cropping.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills with a track record of motivating and developing staff.
  • In-depth knowledge of modern agricultural practices, crop science, and relevant technologies.
  • Proficiency in farm machinery operation, maintenance, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Excellent problem-solving, decision-making, and strategic planning abilities.
  • Solid financial management and budgeting expertise.
  • Valid Australian driver's license.
  • Strong understanding of OH&S regulations and best practices in agriculture.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Science, Agronomy, or a related field.
  • Experience with precision agriculture technologies (e.g., GPS mapping, drone technology, sensor data analysis).
  • Chemical accreditation (e.g., ChemCert) or the ability to obtain one.
  • First Aid certification.
