Job Description
Join Legal Aid Queensland as a Welfare Rights Assistant and play a crucial role in providing vital support to individuals navigating complex welfare and social security systems. Key Responsibilities
- Assist legal officers in providing advice and representation to clients on welfare rights and social security matters.
- Conduct research on relevant legislation, policies, and precedents to support casework.
- Prepare and draft correspondence, submissions, and other legal documents under supervision.
- Maintain accurate client records and case files with strict adherence to confidentiality.
- Communicate effectively with clients, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
- Support the coordination of community legal education and outreach activities.
- Perform administrative tasks to ensure the smooth operation of the legal service.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated understanding of social justice principles and commitment to public service.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong research and analytical abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently.
- High level of empathy, patience, and discretion when dealing with sensitive client matters.
- Residency in Australia with valid work rights.
Preferred Qualifications
- Tertiary qualification in Law, Social Work, Human Services, or a related discipline.
- Previous experience in a legal, community, or public sector environment.
- Familiarity with the Australian social security system and administrative law.
- Experience working with diverse client groups, particularly those from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
- Driver's license and willingness to travel within the region as required.
