Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Junior GIS Officer to join our dynamic team in Irvine, CA. This entry-level position is ideal for a recent graduate or an individual with foundational GIS experience looking to grow their career within a leading engineering and consulting firm. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in supporting council mapping and data initiatives, contributing to various projects that impact local communities. You will be involved in data collection, analysis, map production, and maintaining spatial databases, ensuring accuracy and compliance with project standards. This role offers an excellent opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting, work with diverse datasets, and collaborate with experienced professionals.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the collection, organization, and maintenance of geospatial data for council mapping projects.
- Perform data entry, digitizing, and geocoding to update and expand GIS databases.
- Create and update various types of maps, including zoning, utility, land use, and property maps, using ArcGIS software.
- Conduct spatial analysis to support planning, engineering, and environmental projects.
- Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of GIS data through quality control procedures.
- Prepare clear and concise reports, presentations, and documentation related to GIS projects.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to understand project requirements and deliver GIS solutions.
- Provide technical support and training to internal users on GIS applications and data usage.
- Stay updated with new GIS technologies, software, and best practices.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap/ArcPro) and associated tools.
- Strong understanding of GIS principles, mapping, and spatial data management.
- Experience with data collection, digitizing, and geoprocessing techniques.
- Familiarity with various data formats (e.g., shapefiles, geodatabases, KML).
- Excellent attention to detail and data accuracy.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Geomatics, Urban Planning, Environmental Science, or a related field with a GIS emphasis.
- Internship or project experience in a municipal or consulting environment.
- Familiarity with GPS data collection methods.
- Basic knowledge of Python scripting for GIS automation.
- Understanding of CAD software integration with GIS.
