Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Privacy Officer to join our team, playing a critical role in safeguarding patient and staff data within the healthcare sector. The Privacy Officer will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining our privacy policies and procedures in compliance with UK data protection legislation, including the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018, as well as NHS-specific guidance. This role requires a strong understanding of healthcare data management, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to foster a culture of privacy awareness across the Trust. You will advise on privacy impact assessments, manage data breaches, and ensure all data processing activities meet legal and ethical standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain the Trust's privacy policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with UK GDPR, Data Protection Act 2018, and other relevant legislation.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for data protection inquiries from staff, patients, and regulatory bodies (e.g., ICO).
  • Conduct Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs) for new projects, systems, and data processing activities.
  • Manage and investigate data security incidents and breaches, ensuring timely reporting to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) where required.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance on data protection best practices to all departments within the Trust.
  • Develop and deliver comprehensive privacy training and awareness programs for all staff members.
  • Monitor changes in data protection laws and guidance, advising the Trust on necessary adaptations.
  • Oversee the management of Subject Access Requests (SARs) and other individual rights requests.
  • Collaborate with IT security, legal, and compliance teams to ensure integrated data protection strategies.
  • Prepare and present reports on privacy compliance status to senior management and governance committees.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Privacy Officer, Data Protection Officer, or similar role, preferably within the healthcare sector.
  • In-depth knowledge of UK GDPR, Data Protection Act 2018, and other relevant data protection legislation.
  • Strong understanding of information governance principles and NHS data standards.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to interpret complex legal requirements and translate them into practical advice.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage data breaches and conduct thorough investigations.
  • Proficiency in conducting Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant certification such as CIPP/E, CIPM, or BCS Practitioner Certificate in Data Protection.
  • Bachelor's degree in Law, Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience with NHS specific information governance frameworks (e.g., DCB0129/0160).
  • Experience in developing and delivering privacy training programs.
  • Familiarity with clinical systems and healthcare IT infrastructure.
