Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Paraveterinary Worker with a passion for equine and large animal care to join our specialized team in Portland, Oregon. This crucial role supports our veterinarians in providing exceptional medical care, surgical assistance, and client education for horses, cattle, and other large animals. You will be instrumental in ensuring the smooth operation of our large animal services, focusing on patient comfort, safety, and efficient workflow.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist veterinarians with examinations, treatments, and procedures for equine and large animal patients.
  • Prepare and maintain surgical suites, instruments, and equipment, ensuring sterility and readiness.
  • Administer medications, vaccines, and fluids as directed by the veterinarian.
  • Perform diagnostic imaging (X-rays, ultrasound) and laboratory tests.
  • Monitor anesthesia and vital signs during surgical procedures.
  • Educate clients on animal husbandry, post-procedure care, and preventative health.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and manage inventory of supplies.
  • Handle and restrain large animals safely and humanely.
  • Participate in farm calls and mobile veterinary services as needed.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience working with equine and large animals in a veterinary setting.
  • Strong knowledge of large animal anatomy, physiology, and common diseases.
  • Proficiency in animal restraint techniques for large animals.
  • Ability to operate and maintain veterinary medical equipment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and handle emergencies.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation (for farm calls).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or higher in Veterinary Technology or a related field.
  • Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) or eligible for certification in Oregon.
  • Experience with advanced diagnostic equipment (e.g., portable ultrasound, digital radiography).
  • Prior experience in a mobile large animal practice.
  • Proficiency with veterinary practice management software.
