Job Description
Parks Victoria is seeking a passionate and dedicated National Parks Ranger to join our team in Warrnambool. This vital role combines practical conservation work with delivering engaging tourism experiences, ensuring the protection of our natural assets while enriching visitor understanding and appreciation. You will be responsible for a wide range of duties from ecological monitoring and fire management to visitor services and community engagement. Key Responsibilities
- Undertake ecological monitoring and surveys, including flora and fauna identification.
- Implement conservation programs such as pest animal control, weed management, and habitat restoration.
- Assist with fire preparedness, prevention, and suppression activities, including planned burns and emergency response.
- Engage with park visitors, provide information, promote safe practices, and deliver interpretive programs.
- Maintain park infrastructure, including trails, campgrounds, and facilities.
- Respond to wildlife incidents and assist with wildlife rescue and rehabilitation where appropriate.
- Collaborate with local communities, volunteers, and stakeholders on park management initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with park regulations and contribute to visitor safety and amenity.
- Prepare reports, maintain accurate records, and contribute to park management planning.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated experience in natural resource management or conservation.
- Strong knowledge of Australian flora, fauna, and ecological principles.
- Proficiency in operating and maintaining a range of equipment (e.g., chainsaws, 4WD vehicles, ATVs).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for visitor engagement and community relations.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in challenging outdoor environments.
- Current First Aid certification.
- Valid Australian Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant tertiary qualification in environmental science, conservation, park management, or a related field.
- Experience in fire management, including participation in planned burns or wildfire response.
- Proficiency in GIS software and data collection technologies.
- Experience in delivering interpretive talks or environmental education programs.
- Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal (or similar marine license) if relevant to specific park duties.
