Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Legal Researcher Intern with a strong interest in judicial support to join our team in Elizabeth, NJ. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in legal research methodologies, case analysis, and practical application within a dynamic legal environment. The successful candidate will work closely with experienced attorneys and legal professionals, contributing to ongoing cases and projects with a specific focus on supporting judicial processes and preparing for court proceedings. This role is ideal for law students or recent graduates looking to develop their legal research skills and gain invaluable insights into the judicial system.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive legal research using various databases (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis) to support ongoing cases and judicial inquiries.
- Assist attorneys in preparing legal memoranda, briefs, and other court documents by gathering relevant statutes, case law, and regulations.
- Analyze and summarize complex legal documents, judicial opinions, and legislative histories.
- Maintain organized research files and documentation for easy retrieval and reference.
- Support the litigation team with factual investigation and evidence gathering relevant to judicial proceedings.
- Attend court proceedings, depositions, or client meetings when appropriate, to observe and assist.
- Collaborate with legal teams to identify key legal issues and develop research strategies.
- Assist with citation checking and Bluebook formatting for legal submissions.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of an accredited law school.
- Strong foundational understanding of legal research principles and methodologies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- High level of attention to detail and accuracy.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience with legal research platforms such as Westlaw or LexisNexis.
- Participation in moot court, mock trial, or law review.
- Coursework or experience in constitutional law, civil procedure, or appellate practice.
- Basic understanding of case management systems.
